Halong Bay


Situated in the North-East region of Viet Nam, Ha Long Bay is a bay in the Gulf of Tonkin comprised of regions of Ha Long City, the township of Cam Pha, and a part of the island district of Van Don in Halong Bay. Ha Long Bay borders Cat Ba Island in the southwest, the East Sea in the’ east, and the mainland, creating a 120 km coastline. Ha Long Bay is made up of 1,969 islands of various sizes, 989 of which have been given names.

The Bay it self has an area of 43,400 ha, consists of 775 islands, and forms a triangle with the island of Dau Go (Driftwood Grotto) to the west, the lake of Ba Ham (Three Shelter Lake) to the south, and the island of Cong Tay to the east. Viewed from above, Ha Long Bay resembles a geographic work of art. While exploring the bay, you feel lost in a legendary world of stone islands. There is Man’s Head Island, which resembles a man standing and looking towards the mainland. The regions immediately surrounding the area were classified as a national site by the Ministry of Culture and Information in 1962.

Although you can visit Ha Long Bay all year round, you’d better plan your cruise carefully in Halong Bay. Bad weather affects your vision and even spoils your trip. The best time to visit Ha Long Bay starts is from March to Jun;, avoid crowded public holidays (30 April 30 and 1 May) in Halong Bay. June through September is low season so you can get better deals but pay attention to storm forecasts in Halong Bay. October and November is high season again and it is still sunny. December is cool, cloudy but dry while January and February are cold, foggy and drizzly. The showers will hide the splendour of Halong bay.

It is said that the perfect way to discover and enjoy the world natural wonder is to jump onto a traditional junk sailing to the far-most corners where there are hidden lagoons, unexploited beaches and exotic grottoes that can be found nowhere else in the world. Please be aware that Ha Long Bay is near the major port of Haiphong and therefore suffers from water pollution. It is not uncommon to see piles of rubbish floating in the water and the quality of the water can be dubious for swimming in Halong Bay.

Ha Long Bay cruises mostly run out of Hanoi or the coastal town of Halong City (which faces out and over the bay). There are hundreds of agencies selling tours on the bay, but very few actually run their own boats — instead most are consolidators or resellers. Organising a tour is very much a buyer beware scenario — talk to other travellers and shop around — if you’re paying $15 a head for a two day tour of Ha Long Bay rest assured it will be pretty dodgy. Try to include a stay on Cat Ba Island if you can.

Ha Long Bay has a tropical climate with two distinctive seasons. The summer is wet and hot while the winter is dry and cool. The average temperature in the region ranges between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius, but can plummet significantly in the winter. There are times of heavy fog with low visibility, and violent tropical storms during the summer months. The annual recorded rainfall is between 2000 and 2200 mm.
