My Son

My Son Sanctuary, Vietnam is located in the Quang Nam province which is 69 Kilometers south-west of Da Nang. My Son was an imperial city during the Champa dynasty, a centre for spirituality and worship between the 4th and the 12th centuries. My Son Sanctuary, Vietnam has been listed in the World Heritage site as well, for its exemplification of the heights of Cham architectural achievement and hence is one of the top Vietnam tourist attractions.

My Son Sanctuary, Vietnam is a large complex of religious monuments comprised of more than 70 architectural works built by the nobility of the Champa Kingdom deriving their cultural and spiritual influences from Indian Hinduism. Only 25 vestiges remain today as a standing witness to the reign of Champa Dynasty. These are temples and towers connected to each other through complicated red brick design to reflect the divinity of the king.

One of the most recognized of the Vietnam popular destinations, all temple towers in My Son Sanctuary, Vietnam were built on quadrate foundations each comprising three parts representing different aspect of religion. The solid tower base represents the world of human being, the sacred and mysterious tower body represents the world of spirit and the tower top built in the shape of a man offering flowers or of trees and animals representing things close to spirits and human beings.

What to do?

From the parking area, you will take a Jeep or minivan to the site (about 2km away). Near the ticket office, there is a Champa museum displaying artifacts and the history of the site. You can visit the museum briefly before visiting the temples.

My Son was divided into 10 main groups labeled A to K. All of the sites are connected by reasonably well-labeled walking tracks. You can explore the ruins by foot, with nothing more challenging than a slight hill to cover.

My Son – There are traditional dance performances at various times throughout the day, mostly in the morning for the benefit of the tour groups. The stage is right before you reach the first group of ruins, across from the souvenir shop.
It is also interesting if you come to My Son by car and return to Hoi An by boat.

When to go ?

The best time is between February and April, when rainfall is low and temperatures are comfortable. During summer, the temperatures can get hot; during the rainy season, particularly during October and November, it can rain constantly and there is a high probability of flood and typhoons.

Getting to My Son

Every hotel and travel agency in Hoi An is selling excursions to My Son for unbelievably cheap prices. We took the Sinh Café coach tour which collected us at 8am then proceeded to collect more passengers until the bus was full. On arrival it’s a 2km walk from the car park to the site though jeeps run back and to constantly. We were given a guided tour, returned to the bus that dropped us off at a river stop from where we returned to Hoi An by boat with lunch on board. This whole trip cost a mere $5 plus 60,000 VN (= $4 US) entrance fee.

For a more rewarding experience it would be a good idea to get there before the tour buses arrive. You can hire a car and driver in Hoi An for around $20 and aim to be there at sunrise (truly atmospheric) which is preferable to being there amongst the hordes of tourists. But then again that depends on your budget. The cheap coach trip was fine.
